Helen, Georgia is a picturesque tiny town in Northwest Georgia situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The town is known for its German background, and there are several fantastic German restaurants providing traditional German food such as bratwurst, sauerkraut, strudel, and more.
The eating scene in town has altered drastically in the previous five years. In fact, it’s one of the greatest places to eat in North Georgia. These are some of my favorite places to dine in Helen, Georgia.

Helen GA’s Top 6 German Restaurants
Restaurant and Pub Hofbrauhaus
+170687822489001 N Main St, Helen, Georgia 30545, USA
One of the greatest German places I’ve visited to is the Hofbrauhaus Restaurant & Tavern in Helen, Georgia.
This eatery was suggested to us by several friends and was also on my must-see list after discovering that they fly in freshly baked Jumbo Pretzels from Munich on a daily basis.
Designed to resemble an American GI bar, it features plenty of wood, Bavarian-style beers, and waiters wearing dirndls and lederhosen, based after the Hofbrauhaus in Munich. We were seated on the dog-friendly river-viewing terrace. That looked amazing. But that’s not the major reason this is one of Helen GA’s greatest German eateries.
Its cuisine is mostly traditional German, with a few American dishes thrown in for good measure (such as Sauted Butterflied Trout, Certified Angus Steaks, and burgers).
The Jaeger Schnitzel (breaded pig or chicken cutlet) is also available. Served with two sides of your choice and topped with a house-made mushroom and bacon beef sauce), the Falscher Hase is cooked with fresh ground pork and certified Angus ground chuck, onions, and their unique combination of German spices. Slow-cooked and served with homemade gravy. Served with your choice of two sides.
Bodensee

After spending decades in the Bavarian restaurant sector before migrating to North Georgia, Aurel Prodan and his wife Doina developed this unique treasure among the greatest German restaurants in Helen GA.
Bodensee Restaurant is named after a beautiful Rhine River lake at the northern foothills of the Alps. It’s thus amusing that this is one of the few downtown eateries without a riverfront terrace. My favorite thing, though, was that it was off the usual path, with a tranquil, shaded patio that was pleasant even on a hot summer day.
The Bodensee cuisine features Old World German classics such as Goulash Soup, potato pancakes with sour cream and applesauce, and gigantic pretzels for appetizers.
Platters are perfect for serving dinners. The House Platter includes two varieties of sausage, a smoked pork chop, sauerkraut, and potato salad. The Wurst Sampler Platter features three distinct varieties of wurst, whilst the Sampler Platter for Two includes brats, a beef roll, a pork chop, garlic sausage, spaetzle, and other goodies!
If you’re hungry around midday, consider the Chefs Schnitzel, an oven-baked chicken Schnitzel topped with fried onions, mushrooms, bacon, and cheese.
A lighter Wurst Salad is advised for individuals who wish to preserve their calories for supper or a cool German beer. Dinner will surely surprise you. Among the German favorites on the menu are Hungarian Goulash, homemade Wursts, and Sauerbraten with Potato Dumplings and Red Cabbage.
Have you ran out of creative ideas? The Haus Platter features Knockwurst, handmade garlic wurst, smoked pork chop, sauerkraut, and German potato salad, while the Sampler Platter for Two has Knockwurst, homemade garlic wurst, smoked pork chop, sauerkraut, and German potato salad. Tops my list of the finest German eateries in Helen, GA.
Heidelberg University
+170687800618660 N Main St, Helen, GA 30545, United States of America
This three-story institution, formerly known as Old Heidelberg, is one of the top German restaurants in Helen Georgia.
With its blue-and-white castle-like front, it is the tallest structure in the square, smack dab in the middle of Alpine Helen’s hustle and bustle. As a consequence, there is typically a long queue of people waiting to be entered.
The history of Heidelberg may be traced back to 1977, when Harold and Terry Link (both born in Heidelberg, Germany) launched Helen’s first real German restaurant. By the late 1980s, they’d expanded it, adding a specialist bar, a second dining room, and a large outside terrace (which is now enclosed and known as the Bierhimmel Music Hall).
Since 2013, the restaurant has been under new management, specializing on classic German meals such as Kartoffelpuffer and Riesenbrezel, as well as every kind of wurst and schnitzel conceivable.
In their children’s menu, they offer a Heidelburger, hot dogs, chicken fingers, and other American favorites. But save room for dessert, like Apple Strudel or Black Forest Cake!
Restaurant Old Bavaria Inn
+170687837298619 N Main St, Helen, GA 30545, United States of America
When was the last time you dined at a restaurant that served delectable German food while overlooking the Chattahoochee River? Of course, many restaurants today provide similar alternatives, but what distinguishes Old Bavaria Inn is its welcoming atmosphere and great service. This restaurant is really one-of-a-kind, and everyone is treated as if they are family.
The Old Bavaria Inn’s staff takes pride in their service and is always eager to go above and beyond to ensure your total satisfaction.
The cooks of the Old Bavaria Inn Restaurant provide delectable beef schnitzels, shrimp sandwiches, and goulash. Their apple strudels, Brezeln, and honey pastries are all must-tries. When you’re there, try their superb wheat beer, White Russian, or root beer.
The Old Bavaria Inn provides German culture in an American setting, as well as stunning views of the Chattahoochee River.
The Old Bavaria Inn’s gift store and photo booth are hip. Don’t forget to stop by before leaving the restaurant to get your picture shot in bright costumes against entertaining settings.
Hofers Café and Bakery
+170687882008758 N Main St, Helen, GA 30545, United States of America
Hofers Bakery has been a Georgia institution since Horst and Gerda Hover came from Germany in the late 1950s. After operating many bakeries in Atlanta, the couple decided to build a bakery in Helen in 1991.
Since then, the bakery has grown to include a friendly German Café. At a Wunderbar (beautiful) Oktoberfest celebration in Helen, GA, guests may enjoy an authentic supper as well as wonderful German bread, cakes, and pretzels.
Early risers may have fresh German potato pancakes, a Bavarian cold cut breakfast, or Apfelkuchle (sliced, pan-fried apples sprinkled with cinnamon). Of course, the Café at Hofers is famed for its sandwiches.
Among the most popular foods are the Rueben, Schnitzel Delight, and the Poorboy. Hofers exclusively provides fresh food.

Mullers Café, only two minutes off Helens Main Street, specializes in authentic German cuisine produced with only the finest ingredients.
Several of the recipes have evolved through time and are now exclusively available at Mullers.
